“Harvest Moon” is an absolute masterpiece released in the Harvest season of 1992. For the reader’s sake, I have chosen a few of my favorite songs to talk about, rather than reviewing the entire album. There are many people who could tell you about autumn vegetables, many of whom write for The Post, so I will be sticking to the latter. Harvest brings two things to mind 1) fresh autumn veggies and 2) The album Harvest Moon by Neil Young. There are many other recordings of this jazz standard by such legends as Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Bing Crosby and Diana Krall, but these two recordings are the best.During a brief Woodward Post meeting earlier this month we played with the idea of themed issues, and while we never quite made a definite decision, we did agree that “harvest” would be the most fitting theme for this month. The performance by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong is a timeless treasure, but Billie Holiday’s rendition is equally powerful and compelling. Doris Day recorded a lovely rendition as well, but Nat King Cole delivers his performance with a tender sense of regret that perfectly communicates the text.Īutumn in New York – Billie Holiday / Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong Lots of listeners would defer to the Sinatra recording but I find it a tad slow. Both performances deserve your attention. Originally recorded as an instrumental by Woody Herman and his band, Ella Fitzgerald recorded the song twice (in 19).

The song is based on a true story about guitarist/songwriter Josh Finlayson’s great-uncle, who drowned in Sharbot Lake while hunting in November. The original version from Desmond’s Hip City (1997) is a grinding, raucous warning in the spirit of Crazy Horse, while the Northern Shore version (2012) is a gentler, piano-driven ballad. Article contentĪdmittedly one of my all-time favourite bands, the Skydiggers recorded this song twice. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The funky groove adds a sense of hope and escape. I’m blinded by the lights of October SkiesĪmy Winehouse sings about a bird that escapes this world and “flies in paradise.” One can’t help but hear it as a prophetic metaphor for Winehouse’s own life and tragic early end. It’s warm and compelling, with light textures and rich vocals.

This love song comes from the brilliant 2018 album, Delta. It doesn’t sound like the rest of U2’s catalogue, but stands out for its simplicity. The title track off of the band’s 1981 album is a brief, stark, piano-driven reflection on a colder time and the idea that perhaps our best days are behind us. For enhanced listening, check out the percolating cover by Poolside (a nu-disco, electronica band). “I see it shining in your eyes…I’m still in love with you…” It’s one of the great love songs of all time.
#Harvest moon song full
Generally defined as the last full moon of summer or the first full moon of autumn, the Harvest Moon that uncle Neil sings about is a warm beacon of light under which we go dancing. With pine trees creeking, the raven’s screeching.Īutumn’s here. Autumn’s Here is a detailed collection of senses and memories set to a haunting melody. Every track sparkles and there are no fillers to be found. Canadian music chameleon Hawksley Workman’s lover/fighter album is an absolute essential for any serious music collection.
